The mind is a very powerful thing and also very easily to influence. The mind cannot differentiate between reality and imagination. It plays tricks on us, we can dream in the night and wake up in a bad mood, all because of a dream.
I remember when I was younger I was a worrier. I would worry about everything. “What if …” played a huge part in my mind and then I would play out all these scenarios in my head. And despite being an optimist the outcome often had a pessimistic slant. The problem with these scenarios, they affected my mood. I would be irritated with my husband, or the children, or the boss, or work colleagues all because of what I had imagined. Effectively I had daydreamed it all, none of it was true, but my mind thought it was true.
It took me a long time to learn that the mind does not differentiate between reality and imagination. Those scenarios seemed so real and therefore my mind believed and my emotions were affected accordingly. My whole persona was reacting and living as if those scenarios were real.
The voice in my head
Fast forward to today. Do I have that voice in my head with all that negativity? No I do not. It has been an interesting journey and I have met some outstanding people along the way, visited some amazing countries and learnt so much from those I spent time with.
Those few words “the mind does not differentiate between reality and imagination” are very very powerful and change lives. By choosing what I dream about, what I play out in my mind, I am able to grow and expand both personally and in my business.
Take 5 minutes every day
Here is something to try. Take 5 minutes out and sit with your eyes closed. Wash away all thoughts for these 5 minutes and day dream. Day dream good positive things. I remember when I was a child and couldn’t get to sleep Mum used to tell me to think about going to the seaside. So do that. For just 5 minutes at some point today, day dream about being on a beach, hear the sound of the waves, smell the sea, hear the gulls, feel the warmth of the sun and soak up all that vitamin D, not a care in the world.
