Surely connecting new shoes to time management skills is a stretch, I hear you ask.  I was sorting things out in the house this morning and found a pair of shoes I had totally forgotten about!  The shoes are now proudly sitting on my shoe shelf, ready for the next time I have an occasion to wear them.  However, it got me to thinking……

Bad habits

What bad, time management, habits have we got into without even realising?  I had not put the shoes in the correct place because they were hidden in a box.  It got me to thinking about the skills we have misplaced, hidden or buried.

How can we practice time management and become even more productive, just by re-igniting the skills we learnt so long ago?   The old adage “use it or lose it” comes to mind.

Corporate influence

During my corporate life, I learnt Lean tools and techniques to help suppliers improve their productivity, increase quality and reduce costs.  It was a really interesting job, I got to see some lovely parts of the country and met some fabulous, passionate people.

Today I realised I use many of these skills today, albeit in a totally different setting.    I grew up with my Mum saying “a place for everything and everything in its place”.  In the words of Lean tools and techniques this is “5S”.

My time management game

I have a fabulous game, that I use in my time management course, to show just how much time can be absorbed by trying to find things.  The outcome of the game?  It is so much simpler, quicker and easier to be organised.

So what skills have you forgotten, that if you re-ignited, would be able to save you time?  What bad time management habits have you got into that you need help with?
